There are some laws in New York State that are on the books that you may not even know about but would be glad to know they exist.

There are few states that offer as much as New York State does when it comes to variety of landscapes and lifestyles. New York is well known for the "city that never sleeps" but there are vast pastures forests that cover much of the state as well. Not to mention the thousands of sleepy towns and villages.

There is one law that aims to maintain the peace and quiet that you expect when you are in some of these small towns.

How Loud Is Too Loud?

When it comes to noise, there are some who can't put up with the constant traffic you would find in a city or along the New York State Thruway. That is where the "SLEEP" law can help.

According to New York State, "Governor Kathy Hochul today signed legislation that increases penalties against motorists and repair shops that illegally modify mufflers and exhaust systems to make them excessively noisy — an act associated with aggressive driving that harms community health, safety and comfort".

The law zeros in on the shops that install loud equipment.

"Maximum fines for installing illegal equipment will be raised to $1,000, an $850 increase".

Some people claim that the loud pipes are "scary" while others simply want peace and quiet in their neighborhood. Either way, there are noise ordinances in most municipalities and the maximum tends to be 90 decibels.
