Scary Warning For Strawberries, Produce in New York State
Every year, New York State produces about 3 million pounds of strawberries that are sold and are typically around 8th in the nation in regard to how many are grown. But now officials are warning of the amount of pesticides on produce from the grocery stores.
Every single year there is a list that comes out that mentions foods that have so many chemicals on them from growing on farms. The USDA really makes sure people know what produce needs to be washed based on the testing that they do on hundreds of different produce and that includes the organic produce as well. Strawberries are far the worst.
Here is what you need to do:
Clean them. Take all of your produce and wash it. You cannot just rinse it for a second under water, you are going to need to empty them in bowl and let them sit. There are some cleaning "soaps" for produce, but you can simply add some baking soda to the water for a couple of minutes. Have you ever cleaned your produce and seen what the water looks like afterward?
Now, two more items were added. Blackberries and potatoes were added to the list. Officials are saying that there there are so many pesticides on strawberries specifically. According to the Hill:
The USDA data found that 93 percent of blackberry samples had pesticide residues, with an average of four different pesticides per sample. More than half of blackberry samples contained residue of the pesticide cypermethrin — which the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies as a possible human carcinogen.
