According to WIVB, Officials announced that they are in the process of removing the Ice Boom and it turns out that this is the 2nd earliest ever that they are removing it. The earliest removal ever was on February 28th, 2012.

The Ice Boom is used to lessen the amount of ice that enters the Niagara River during the winter months.

The Ice boom has been used by the New York Power Authority and Ontario Power Generation since 1964.
