As we get ready for the busy summer and the hot weather, there are reports that the cost of electricity is about to soar in New York State.

It was not that long ago that we experienced rolling blackouts in New York State as the power grid was stretched to it's limits. The summer heat means more people are using air-conditioners, fans and other electric powered cooling units and it is tough for the power grid to keep up.

But the next time you want to escape the heat in your home, it may be way more expensive.

According to some reports, National Grid’s proposal today follows a similar pattern of unprecedented, double-digit rate hikes sought by other New York utilities in recent months, including big rate hikes sought by National Grid’s downstate natural gas businesses.

National Grid is asking the Public Service Commission to approve a 15-percent rate hike for electricity and a 20-percent spike for gas. This may be just 6 months away for some customers.

Here in New York State, there are ways to get a FREE air conditioner.

But the summer is so long and not much fun if you can breath or you are sweating in the house and unable to sleep. That is why an air conditioner is so necessary.

According to New York State, you can qualify for cooling assistance, "Only one air conditioner or fan, not to exceed $800 with installation for a window, portable air conditioner, or fan and not to exceed $1,000 for an existing wall sleeve unit, will be provided per applicant household. No additional HEAP cash benefits are available".
