This week's High School Football Hero is Sean Barry of Springville High School.  He was nominated by his coach Sean Bruso who says Sean's story is unique.  He's only a sophomore playing in his third varsity season and they knew he was something special when they discovered him at a mini-camp during the summer of his 8th grade year.

They thought he was a little raw, but they convinced him to play JV as an 8th grader. After around 4 weeks it was evident he was developing into something special. So special that he was called up to play on the varsity team and recorded 3 initial hits and 1 tackle in that game, becoming the youngest player in WNY to register a statistic.

He never missed workouts and earned a starting spot on the varsity roster during his fresman year, becoming a very important piece of the puzzle, giving Springville its first football championship since the State title team of 1996. He was the only Freshman in Western New York to be named to an All-League team selected by the coaches. He's a kid that everyone would dream to coach.

This offseason again, he never missed a day and was a leader of the group. He does all the right things and commands respect when he enters the room. He's not a rah rah type of kid, just someone who shows up and shows others how to lead the way. But he tore his ACL on the opening kickoff in week 2 and was lost for the season.

What makes this kid special is even though his season is lost, he is still there every day around his teammates being a leader for them from the sidelines at practices and games. He inspires his classmates with his calm demeanor and passion for whatever he does. He's a football hero because it's not easy to be 15 and deal with the adversity of what he has dealt with and looked up to as one of the guys, and not just on the football field. He takes everything in stride and is so wise and mature beyond his years.

We are hoping and praying his surgery and rehab go off without a hitch and he will be back on the field/court/diamond next year and back with vengeance.

Congratulations to Sean.  In addition to the family four-pack of tickets to the Hall of Fame, we're giving Sean a WYRK t-shirt.

Who's next?  Nominate a player you know and we could honor him next week.
