An Important Reminder For Western New Yorkers About Sweetest Day
Guys, this is mostly a heads-up for you. There is a national holiday coming up tomorrow, and I'm sure that most of you have overlooked it. I know, because I'm a guy, and if I didn't look it up, I wouldn't have realized it either. Hopefully, reading this and sharing it with your friends will save you from having a rough weekend.
Saturday, October 18th, is Sweetest Day
I know, it's another holiday that you have to remember, and if you don't, then obviously you don't love your significant other (no, that's not true, but the world will make you feel that way!).
It's celebrated on the third Saturday in October every year.
What the heck IS Sweetest Day?
If this is news to you, don't feel bad. Over the years, Sweetest Day has taken on a new meaning. A lot of people have made Sweetest Day out to be a second Valentine's Day, only instead of celebrating it in the spring, it's in the fall. The problem is that a lot of people use the day to make huge gestures to show how much someone means to them, which is actually the opposite of what the day is for.
According to NationalDayCalendar.com, the observance started simply with candy and sweets given to our sweethearts and friends. It's always been about little gestures and tokens. It's meant to encourage everyone to be generous "even in the smallest ways."
Should we celebrate Sweetest Day?
Sure, we should celebrate it. It's always good to be generous and kind. But is it the kind of day where we should be planning extravagant trips or expensive dinners? Not at all. On this national day, it really is just about the thought.
