Think of all of the cities in the country you might think are fun places to spend some time in.  New York City?  Las Vegas?  Chicago?  Nashville?  If you came up with a list of 150 cities where would Buffalo end up on that list?  You might be surprised.

Most people can expect to move at least 11 times in their lives.  Most often it's the result of employment opportunities or family changes.  Sometimes it's just the pursuit of something different.  Ideally you want to pick a place that's good for raising a family, but there are so many factors involved how do you sort them all out?

How does Buffalo fare among the country's best-run cities?  In an analysis of the country's 150 biggest cities Buffalo came in at 124, placing it in the bottom third.  But that shouldn't be surprising.  Most of the larger cities in the country rank toward the bottom of the list because of high unemployment rates and low average personal income meaning higher expenses for cities.

In terms of the economy and the job market I've seen Buffalo go from boom to bust over a period of decades.  During the 1950's and 60's, Buffalo was booming with heavy industry providing plenty of high paying jobs.  It was hard work, but they provided families with a good income.

Finally some good news from the huge banking conglomerate that essentially kicked Buffalo to the curb six years ago.  HSBC is expected to move a large number of jobs to Western New York as the result of the closing of a 450-person office in New Castle, Delaware.

I've lived in Western New York all of my life.  I've been driving since I was 16 and I'm not going to even bother telling you how long that's been.  Let's just say it's been a while.  And for many years I've always maintained that the traffic lights in the City of Buffalo are not meant to control traffic, they're meant to stop traffic.  Almost to the point of impeding traffic.
