If you're panicking today because you were going to do your taxes on your own and figured you'd wait until the deadline to get them in, you're running out of time.  The good news is, you're not out of time yet.

Why is the deadline to file your taxes April 18th this year?

Normally, the deadline falls on April 15th.  That's the day that you've got to file your taxes with the government.  However, because April 15th was on a Saturday this year, it would've been moved to the following Monday which would be the 17th.  That turns out to be the day that we celebrate Emancipation Day in the U.S. so it was pushed one more day to the 18th.

Don't worry, there's another extension that you can file for

If you still haven't gotten your taxes done yet, there is still going to be another extension that you qualify for if you live in Western New York.

If you live or own a business in Erie, Genesee, or Niagara County, you automatically qualify for an extension on your federal taxes until May 15th.

Why is there an extension for Western New Yorkers?

According to the IRS, the extension is because of the blizzard that hit Buffalo and the Western New York area in December of 2022.

The declaration permits the IRS to postpone certain tax-filing and tax-payment deadlines for taxpayers who reside or have a business in the disaster area. - IRS

Farmers will also be getting a little extra time.  Farmers who choose to forgo making estimated tax payments and normally file their returns by March 1 will now have until May 15, 2023 to file their 2022 return and pay any tax due.

This is just an extension for your federal taxes.  You have to request an extension from the New York Department of Taxation and Finance for your state taxes by today (4/18), using Form IT-370 or filling out the application online.
