If you go shopping at Tops, specifically the one in the D&L Plaza Shopping Center, you may have noticed this massive inconvenience inside the store.

While it’s easy to get frustrated after running into this obstacle, there is a good reason behind why Tops Friendly Markets has implemented this shopping structure.

As someone who does their grocery shopping after 8 PM on most days, the Tops at the D&L Plaza Shopping Center in Depew, NY will have a barricade of shopping carts blocking the main aisle of the store shopping.

It’s unfortunate for shoppers, because it means you have to go all the way around and double back, which definitely slows down your trip – especially if you’re only visiting the store for one missing item you need for dinner.

However, there is a big reason why Tops will block the main aisle as it gets later in the day, and it makes total sense.

Richard, a Tops customer, asked the staff recently why they do this, and he shared the response on Facebook. “[It’s] to discourage grab-and-dashers. I asked one time, and that’s what I was told.”

Joanna, another Tops customer, confirmed the news. “I also asked,” she wrote. “An employee said kids were running in, stealing stuff, and running out.”

Thus, the creation of the shopping cart wall was born.

It’s sad that a few bad eggs can ruin the whole batch, but that’s how the saying goes, right?
