Trooper Spits On & Pulls Gun On Journalist
There are numerous challenging jobs that people undertake in America. Listed among those jobs is law enforcement. Law enforcement officers have a generally dangerous job when it comes to keeping people safe. Given the inherent danger that officers deal with on a daily basis, officers are often given a bit of latitude when dealing with the public, so long as they act within the bounds of the law.
Another potentially dangerous job that exists is journalism, especially for those who work as investigative journalists.
From time to time, law enforcement and investigative journalists cross paths, and for the most part, those interactions go on without incident. However, that is not what happened recently in Groton, CT, which is just across the Long Island Sound from New York State, when an independent journalist knocked on the door of a Connecticut State Trooper's home while investigating a story about police misconduct.
Connecticut State Trooper Spits On And Pulls Gun On New York Journalist
According to reporting from WFSB-TV and CT Insider, New York-based independent journalist SeanPaul Reyes visited Connecticut State Police Sgt. Bryan Fahey to ask questions about potential misconduct that Fahey was being accused us.
After answering the door, a video showed Fahey going back inside his house, grabbing an unholstered gun, and pushing Reyes down a road before spitting in his face. Shortly after the incident, Groton Police officers arrived on the scene.
According to additional reporting from the Hartford Courant, instead of Sgt. Fahey being arrested, the officers arrested the journalist and cameraman, charging them with several crimes, including trespassing and breach of the peace.
As news of this incident has spread, many are calling the actions of the trooper into question and wondering why the journalist was charged with a crime and not the trooper. The trooper remains on the job, according to reporting.
This is just the latest run-in this trooper and journalist have had over the years; a previous interaction led to a federal lawsuit being filed.
