Hunters Called On To Help In Western New York
There’s an incredible opportunity for hunters across New York State to give back to those in need this fall. As we wait to see what happens next with the federal government, many of our friends and neighbors could use our help and hunters have a great way to lend a hand.
Deer season is underway across New York State. Here in Western New York, archery season is in full swing, and this year hunters can also use crossbows to harvest whitetail deer. Thanks to new legislation, there are now no restrictions on crossbow use, which means more hunters are heading back into the woods this season.
For those who are fortunate enough to harvest a deer, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is encouraging hunters to donate their venison to help feed families in need. There are several programs across the state that make it easy to donate your processed venison — and every pound makes a difference for local food banks and community assistance programs.

Venison is a lean, healthy, and delicious source of protein. It’s also naturally organic and locally sourced and a true farm-to-table food from the woods of New York. Whether you hunt during archery season or the upcoming firearm season, donating your venison is a meaningful way to share the harvest and give back to your community.
If you’re interested in donating, visit the New York State DEC website or their official Facebook page for a list of participating processors and donation programs near you.
Good luck to all the hunters heading into the woods this fall! I’ve had a few encounters myself this season, but no big bucks have wandered by my stand just yet. With the season at its midpoint, though, things are just starting to heat up.
And for families who could use some help putting food on the table, check with local food banks, community programs, or DEC partners to see if venison donations are available in your area.
