The World Video Game Hall Of Fame is an international hall of fame exhibit that is housed in Rochester, New York. It is located in the National Museum of Play’s eGameRevolution exhibit, which is overseen by The Strong Museum and the International Center for the History of Electronic Games.
It was only within the last 10 years or so that video games became eligible for the World Video Game Hall of Fame. That eligibility is based on the following criteria:
Icon status - how recognizable is it?
Longevity - did it get more popular over time?
Worldwide reach - does it cross international borders?
Influence - has it affected pop culture?
And the World Video Game Hall of Fame has announced its class of 2023 inductees.
It was difficult to narrow it down, but here are the list of inductees:
The Last of Us
Wii Sports
Computer Space
Barbie Fashion Designer
Wii Sports was first released in 2006, and many people have been waiting for their induction moment since video games were first eligible for the Hall of Fame back in 2015.
The four inductees were finalized from a bigger list earlier in the year, which also included Age of Empires, Angry Birds, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, FIFA International Soccer, Goldeneye 007, NBA 2K, Quake, and Wizardry.
You will be able to see the new inductees at the World Video Game Hall of Fame as early as June 30, 2023. The games will be inducted on that day and put on display for years to come.
It might be worth adding Rochester to your summer road trip bucket list!
