Planning to travel by plane in or through New York in the next couple of months?  Expect to have some major wait times while you're there.

Holiday travel is always iffy when it comes to wait times.  We all know there's no place like home for the holidays and millions of people are trying to get there to be with family and friends.  But delays can take a dream trip and make it a nightmare.  Will flights be delayed?  Will weather impact your flight?  How long will I have to wait to get through security?  It can make your trip seem even more complicated and difficult.  If you're traveling through New York airports, there's a good chance that you'll have some massive wait times this year.

A recent study by Jettly looked at airports across the country to see which airports had the longest security lines and the most delays during Thanksgiving and the winter holidays.  They asked over 1000 travelers about their experiences at each airport to determine the results.

This New York Airport struggles for Thanksgiving Travel

One New York airport showed up a couple of times on their list.  When it comes to airports with the longest average peak wait times due to standing in security lines around Thanksgiving, John F. Kennedy International (JFK) was in the top 3 with people waiting for 53.2 minutes.  It's a big airport so it's not outrageous to think that you might need a little extra time to process all those people, right?  When you look at the airports with the most flight delays by the percentage of flights delayed, JFK is once again in the top 10.  They sit at #8 on that list.

Christmas wait times aren't much better

Christmas is easily the worst holiday at the end of the year for travel wait times.  So they broke it down for Christmas also.  JFK came up 4th on this list with an average wait time of 62.1 minutes in security.

Chances are, you're going to have to wait in a line to travel this holiday.  So there are some things you can do to make sure you're on time for your flight.  You've heard a million times that you need to get to the airport early.  Arrive 2 hours ahead of time for a domestic flight and 3 hours for an international flight.  You can pay for TSA PreCheck to get through security faster too.

Pack your patient pants and just plan on there being lines to wait in and you'll be a much happier traveler.
