I was sad to hear of the passing of Charlie Daniels today.  I grew up on his music...but I realize not every one has.  If you aren't familiar with his stuff, now is a good time to learn.

When I was growing up my dad and my brother were the country music fans in our house.  I liked everything but wasn't really drawn to country until high school.  But I remember Charlie Daniels band music from the get-go.  I can remember watching my dad sing along to "What This World Needs Is A Few More Rednecks" and when my brother got "Charlie Daniels: A Decade of Hits" for his birthday.  We've been listening to him for years.

When America went through the tragedy that was 9/11, Charlie Daniels', "In America" became a bit of an anthem for a country that was trying to heal.

I was able to meet him just a few days before my daughter was born in 2004 and it was a surreal experience.  It almost felt like I was meeting the pope at the time.  He didn't do meet & greets the way I had seen them done in the past.  He was sitting behind a table.  But man...I almost felt like I should be kissing his rings or something.  Even if you didn't know him or his music, at that moment, you knew you were in the presence of a legend.  That word tends to get thrown around quite a bit these days, but Charlie Daniels had that career.

He's got so many hits!  While it was definitely his most well-known hit, his catalog goes way beyond just "The Devil Went Down To Georgia."
