14 Years Ago: Toby Keith Hits #1 With “As Good As I Once Was”
We all grow older. It's a harsh fact of life. There are certain things we could easily do in our teens or twenties, that are a bit harder now in our thirties and forties.
"As Good As I Once Was" sums up that sentiment so well but also does it with a perfect dose of humor that made it a fan favorite.
Released in May of 2005, the song would race to #1 by July and stay there until the end of August, spending six week at #1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart. It would tie "Beer For My Horses" from 2003, as the longest #1 stays at radio in Toby's career.
Written by Toby and singer-songwriter friend Scotty Emerick, the song was the second single off Toby's Honkytonk University album. It would also be the final single for Toby at label DreamWorks Nashville, which folded in September of 2005. He would start his own label, Show Dog Nashville. The album was closed out by "Big Blue Note" (#5).
I was a teenage when this song was out and didn't really relate to it. Now that I just turned 30, I can finally appreciate the humor this song was point out.
...the music video is also, hilarious!
