Sandy the seal is turning 40 years old this weekend! Now, 40 is impressive because in the wild the most seals only end up living to about twenty five years old. Sandy is actually a bit of animal history. In fact, she's not just known here in Western New York, but all over the United States for her ground-breaking surgery.

In 1987, Sandy was the first harbor seal to undergo cataract surgery. The story made national news. "That's a pretty big deal" according to Tammy, adding "It actually paved the way for other marine mammals to get that same surgery", according to WKBW.

The Aquarium of Niagara will be celebrating and having a cake for everyone to see on August 1st (her actual birthday), so if you're looking for something to do this weekend, you can grab the kids and head out to the aquarium. Due to the pandemic, there are limited amount of tickets that can be sold per day, so it would be a good idea to buy them in advanced.

While you're there, you have to check out the penguin encounter where you can hang out and take your picture with one of the residents at the Aquarium!
