After two and a half years, the spokesperson for the Buffalo Catholic Diocese is stepping down.  George Richert will remain on the job until September 7th.

Buffalo Bishop Richard Malone issued a statement on Wednesday which said in part;

I am extremely grateful to George for his counsel during his tenure with the diocese, especially in these tumultuous times. George was a valued member of my leadership team, respected in the community, and a gentleman of high integrity. I wish him the very best as he pursues other opportunities.
I will announce an interim diocesan spokesperson soon as we commence with a search for a new Director of Communications.

You can't help speculate that Richert's sudden announcement that he'll be leaving the Diocesan post is likely related to the intense pressure and focus the Diocese and the bishop have come under in the ongoing sex abuse scandal within the Catholic Church.  The bishop has dismissed numerous calls to resign for the way he has handled sex abuse allegations in the Buffalo Diocese.

Richert previously worked in radio and TV before taking the job as Director of Communications with the Diocese.
