15-Year Anniversary Of Famous Buffalo Sports Moment
The Buffalo Bills are the talk of Western New York and has been since 2019. Let's be honest, the Bills have for the most part been the top sports team in this region, as much as we adore the Buffalo Sabres.
However, from 2005-2007, the Sabres were absolutely the more popular team in Buffalo.
They went to back-to-back Eastern Conference Finals, and most fans will tell you that without losing four of their top six defenseman by game 7 against Carolina in 2006, they would have won the Stanley Cup.\
The Sabres hype was full throttle by 2006-2007 and the next playoff run would include one of the most famous Buffalo sports moments ever. Today is the 15-year anniversary of that game and that memorable play.
Game 5 of the 2007 Eastern Conference semi-final between the New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres.
The series was tied 2-2 and the Rangers were leading 1-0 with 17 seconds left in regulation.
That's when former captain Chris Drury scored the game-tying goal with 7.7 seconds left in regulation.
Maxim Afinogenov would win the game in overtime.
The Sabres went back to Madison Square Garden to eliminate the Rangers in six games.
I remember watching this game like it was yesterday. I watched almost every minute of that season and playoff run and 2007 is always a special year for me because of that team. It was a sad ending against Ottawa in the Eastern Conference Final, but those two Sabres teams out of the lockout were the most fun I have ever had watching a sports team; at least until the 2020-2021 Bills.
