
Controversial “Kite Permit” In Affect In New York State
The summer is the perfect time to fly your favorite kite. However, here in New York State, you may need a permit to fly that kite.
When the wind is right, and you are in the right spot, flying a kite is one of the most relaxing and memorizing activities. Kids LOVE trying to run and get their kite to lift off and seeing it flowing on the breeze is pretty amazing.
However, in some locations, it may not be as safe as you might think to fly a larger sized kite.

Recently, there were reports that New York State forced a group to stop flying their kites along Lake Erie unless they get the proper permit.
Channel 4 in Buffalo, New York ran the story below. The laws and permits pertain to the larger kites that you may have seen.
New York State has a website that is devoted to permits. It is not as clear and easy to use but is the resource for finding and getting a permit for a variety of activities in New York State Parks.
It has been neat to see the kites flying along the waterfront. When you come over the Skyway or take a bike ride along the Waterfront, it was neat to see the larger kites.
As far as your backyard kite flying, it is always a good idea to keep safety in mind. Watch for power lines, and for the kids, watch for trip hazards when they run to get that kite to lift off.
