Sometimes it’s the most ordinary things that end up being the most extraordinary, especially when you take the time to notice them. If you live in New York State, all you have to do is look out your back door to find something entertaining and wonderful happening right outside. For families with little ones, these simple moments can be the perfect way to teach kids about nature while having a little fun together.

We have four children under nine years old, and some of our best memories as a family have been unplanned while we are just hanging out around the house. Whether it’s watching deer pass through the yard or seeing the first snowflakes fall, we all run to the window with excitement every single time!

I’ve always loved the outdoors, and sharing that love of nature with my kids is one of the best parts of being a parent. Western New York is a fantastic place to raise a family, not just because of the great schools and wonderful people, but because of the natural beauty and outdoor experiences we get to enjoy for free all year long.

A Most Meticulous Squirrel In Our Yard

This past weekend, a squirrel was busy burying food for the winter right outside our window. I grabbed my phone to record the moment while explaining to the kids what was happening. This might have been the most meticulous squirrel I’ve ever seen! I told them how squirrels carefully camouflage the spots where they hide their nuts so other animals, especially blue jays, don’t steal their stash.

The kids were fascinated! Who doesn’t love watching a squirrel in action? They’re goofy, fast, and endlessly entertaining. If it were up to my kids, that squirrel would have become a new household pet. But I reminded them that nature is best left in nature and it might be cute and fun to watch, but wild animals belong outdoors where they can live freely.
