Making People More Mad–New Details On Free College in New York State
On Thursday, new details were released about the free SUNY college tuition that is available to New Yorkers if your parents who do not make over $100,000 in 2017.
If your parents qualified, you are able to go to any SUNY or state school for free coming up this Fall. The catch was, once you graduated you had to stay here in New York and work for a certain amount of time because, as Governor Cuomo said, it was an 'investment'. Though, New York State seems to be changing their mind. Now, if you decided you want to leave New York right after college you can apply to not pay the State back.
One of the criticisms of the law was students who graduate from SUNY and left the state for a job would have to forego the free tuition they received. The state would convert it back to a loan if a graduate left the state before four years or the length of their college time. The corporation said it would allow students to demonstrate "extreme hardship as a result of a disability, labor market conditions, or other such circumstances" to either postpone or suspend the repayment -- or prorate it based on the time a student complied with the residency and employment requirements.
The "Excelsior Scholarship" is set up for kids that have parents that make less than:
- $100,000 in 2017
- $110,000 in 2018
- $125,000 in 2019
