This past weekend was the Youth Hunt for Spring Turkey Hunting. This is a special weekend designated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to encourage youths ages 12 to 15 to discover the exciting hobby of turkey hunting.

My hunting buddy Don Vizzi took his 14 year old son Matthew down to Caneadea, NY with the hope of getting his first bird. My other hunting buddy Brian Bennett was also there.

Saturday morning Matthew shot a beauty using a 20 gauge shotgun. This adult tom weighed 21 pounds with a 7 and 3/4 inch beard and had inch and an eighth spurs. That is fantastic for a first bird. Congratulations Matthew on a job well done.

I am sure that Matthew and his father Don will both remember that moment for the rest of their lives. I got my son his first bird back in '07 on the Youth Weekend. It's a memory that I cherish forever.

The regular Spring Turkey season for Western New York will begin on May 1, 2012 and will continue until May 31. I am inviting all WYRK listeners who turkey hunt to please email me your photos of your birds. Good Luck and Be safe!
