Major Traffic Change Coming to One of Orchard Park’s Most Dangerous Intersections
Drivers in the Southtowns are already noticing a major road construction project underway in Orchard Park.
If you regularly travel near New York State Route 219, you are likely familiar with the busy intersection of Armor Duells Road and Murphy Road. This area has been the site of numerous accidents over the years, and now the New York State Department of Transportation is working to improve both safety and traffic flow.

Here in Western New York, we often joke that there are only two seasons: winter and road construction season. With spring now in full swing, orange traffic cones have become a familiar sight across New York State. Despite the unusually wet weather, construction projects are moving forward, and drivers are encountering delays in many areas.
Major Changes Coming to Armor Duells Road and Murphy Road
One of the biggest changes is taking place at the intersection of Armor Duells Road, Murphy Road, and nearby Duerr Road.
Drivers who have struggled to cross Armor Duells Road from Murphy Road toward Duerr Road will soon see a significant improvement. The intersection is being converted into a single-lane roundabout designed to reduce crashes and keep traffic moving more efficiently.
Public Hearing Gave Residents a First Look
Last year, state officials held a public hearing to explain the details of the project and answer questions from residents and commuters who use the intersection regularly.
"The project proposes to construct a single lane roundabout at the intersection of Armor Duells Road, Duerr Road and Murphy Road. Sidewalks are proposed along the new roundabout to accommodate pedestrians and lighting will be installed. Roadside ditches and drainage pipes will be re-established within the project limits".
Since then, the roundabout has become a popular topic of discussion on neighborhood forums such as Nextdoor and other social media platforms.
A Challenging Intersection on Buffalo Bills Game Days
Having lived at this intersection for several years, I know firsthand how difficult it can be to navigate, especially on home game days for the Buffalo Bills.

After games, thousands of vehicles attempt to reach Route 219 or travel south along Armor Duells Road toward Orchard Park, Boston, and Colden. The new roundabout should help ease congestion during these peak traffic periods.
It may also improve traffic flow during the Erie County Fair, when this area sees a substantial increase in vehicles each summer.
Construction Work Already Underway
Construction has been underway for several weeks. Large excavators are on site, and crews are installing new culverts and drainage pipes.
If progress continues as planned, it may not be long before the roundabout is completed and drivers begin using the new traffic pattern.
How to Drive Safely in a Roundabout
For drivers who are unfamiliar with roundabouts, now is a good time to review the rules of the road.
The most important rule is simple: yield to vehicles already circulating in the roundabout. Once there is a safe opening, enter the circle and continue to your desired exit.
Although roundabouts can seem confusing at first, they are proven to reduce serious crashes and improve traffic efficiency.
Growth in Orchard Park Has Increased Traffic Concerns
As more homes are built in this part of Orchard Park, traffic volumes have increased significantly.
Over the years, I have witnessed several T-bone collisions and other serious accidents at this intersection. Hopefully, the new roundabout will reduce those crashes and provide a smoother, safer experience for everyone traveling through the area.
While the work is being completed, residents are asked to be patient. "Both the road closure and the traffic shift/speed reduction are expected to remain in place for approximately eight weeks".
