Here’s Why Niagara Falls Will Be Illuminated In Different Colors This Month
It's not uncommon to see Niagara Falls illuminated in a special color to observe a special holiday or bring attention to a specific cause. But this month, we will see multiple color combinations, and here's why.
Niagara Falls is celebrating the FIFA World Cup this month
The FIFA World Cup kicks off on June 11, and to celebrate, Niagara Falls will be illuminated in the colors of the flags for the countries where the games are being hosted. You will see a light show highlighting the falls in red and white for Canada, red, white, and blue for the United States, and red, green, and white for Mexico.
There will also be a sequence showing the colors of each participating country as part of the group stage.
Here's when you can catch the show
It will be a 15-minute light show that will begin on June 11th and continue each night of the tournament. The first night following the show, the Falls will be illuminated in green, white, and red, to celebrate Mexico's first game of the tournament as a host nation.
The show will begin at 10 p.m., along with the nightly fireworks.
The illumination is a group effort
The light shows are courtesy of the Niagara Falls illumination board. They've financed and operated the “illumination of Niagara Falls” since 1925. It's made up of representatives from the City of Niagara Falls Ontario, City of Niagara Falls, New York, Ontario Power Generation Inc., New York Power Authority, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and The Niagara Parks Commission.
All of the special illumination requests are reviewed and approved by that board.
