Critical April 30th Deadline for Drivers in New York State
The forecast is calling for a return to colder temperatures across New York State. After a significant snowmelt, especially in areas that saw steady rainfall, much of the snowpack has disappeared.
In parts of Buffalo, including downtown, there is virtually no snow left. That’s a dramatic change from just a couple of weeks ago, when feet of lake-effect snow piled up and made driving conditions extremely difficult.
As we close out February and look ahead to March, there are several important reminders for New York State drivers.
Overnight Parking Laws Are Still in Effect
If you park on the street in a village or city, remember that overnight parking laws are still being enforced, regardless of current weather conditions.

Even if the snow has melted, local winter parking regulations typically remain in place until mid-March or April 1, depending on the municipality. Be sure to check with your local city or village to avoid unnecessary tickets.
There is an end in sight, but we’re not there just yet.
Driving Conditions Can Change Quickly in Buffalo and Western New York
Weather conditions in Buffalo and across Western New York can change dramatically from minute to minute.
Recent rainfall has created standing water on many roadways. For early morning commuters, that can quickly turn into dangerous patches of black ice, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads.
Even when roads appear wet, temperatures dipping below freezing can create slick, nearly invisible hazards.
Studded Tire Law in New York State: What Drivers Need to Know
Proper traction is critical during winter driving season. Some drivers choose to install studded snow tires for additional grip, particularly in heavy snow regions like Western New York.
If that’s you, heres what you need to know:
According to New York State law, studded tires are permitted from October 16 through April 30. After April 30, they must be removed.
This seasonal restriction helps prevent unnecessary road damage during the warmer months. So if you’re currently using studded tires, you’re still within the legal window, but be mindful of the removal deadline as spring approaches.
Winter Driving Safety Tips for Late Season Storms
By this point in winter, most New Yorkers have adjusted to winter driving conditions. Still, it’s important not to get complacent.
Safe winter driving habits include:
- Leaving extra space between you and the vehicle in front of you
- Adjusting your speed based on road conditions
- Staying alert and focused, especially on snow- or ice-covered roads
- Being cautious during early morning and overnight hours when black ice is most common
Late-season storms can be just as dangerous as early winter events.
Is Spring Finally Around the Corner?
The good news? The next stretch of Arctic temperatures and snowfall doesn’t appear to be long-lasting.
Daily highs are expected to reach the mid-30s over the next week. The increasing angle of the sun this time of year will also help melt snow more efficiently whenever it falls.
While summer heat isn’t necessary just yet, many New Yorkers are ready for a break from the constant grind of winter weather. Warmer, drier, and more consistent conditions can’t come soon enough.
