Tonawanda School District Board Approves A New Mascot
For years, the Tonawanda City School District used "Warriors" as their mascot. However, that will be changing soon since the board has approved a new one.
It was just two days ago that Iroquois School District announced that they would be changing their mascot from the Chiefs to the Red Hawks. Now, they're looking for help from the public to come up with a new logo for the school.
Now, The City of Tonawanda has announced that their school will be changing mascots too. Following a vote by taxpayers in the district they settled on the Timberwolves.
“I’m pleased to announce that our Board of Education approved the Tonawanda Timberwolves as the new name and logo for the district. Our committee worked extremely hard to engage our entire community in this process. I’m grateful for the continued support and pride that our students, staff, families, and community hold for our district.” -Dr. Timothy Oldenburg, Superintendent of Tonawanda Schools
Their process began back in October of 2023 with a series of votes that would narrow the field to three final choices. Today the board approved the new name and logo, which still has the same maroon and white color scheme with the signature T in the middle.
As mentioned above, Tonawanda isn't alone in choosing a new mascot for their schools. The changes came following a memorandum entitled "Use of Native American Mascots" that came from the New York State Education Department in November of 2022. The goal was to ensure that all district mascots, team names, and logos are non-discriminatory.
Already we've seen mascot changes from Lancaster, West Seneca West, Iroquois Central School District and now Tonawanda.
