As the weather begins to warm up, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has an important warning for residents.

Winter is the time of year when many animals hibernate and rest. However, when spring comes around, not only do they begin to wake up, but they're normally very hungry and willing to risk more to eat more.

The New York State DEC is warning people about bears this spring

As the weather gets warmer in New York State, we will begin to see more animals looking for food in residential areas. We've already heard multiple reports of coyotes that are roaming in people's backyards, but they're not alone. The DEC is warning people about emerging bears, also.

For weeks now, bears have been hibernating.  Now that they're beginning to wake up, they're looking for food and are very hungry.

We have to share space with bears.  New York is their home, just as it is ours. We all live in the same space, and normally, if we leave them alone, they will leave us alone.

However, there are some things that we can do to avoid coming into contact with them.

"Across New York State, black bears are emerging from their winter dens looking for something good to eat, including human-created sources like bird feeders, grills, and pet food. Repeated access to these food sources can make bears bolder, so DEC encourages New Yorkers to practice the BearWise basics to help keep bears wild and prevent the potential for human-bear conflicts.” - DEC Acting Commissioner Amanda Lefton

Tips from the DEC to avoid bears coming to your property for food:

  • Empty feeders and clean spilled seed, and let nature feed the birds from spring through fall.
  • Secure or store garbage and recycling cans in a sturdy building.
  • Clean and remove residual grease and food from grills and smokers.
  • Keep pets and livestock food indoors; those with chicken coops or apiaries should consider installing an electric fence to protect flocks and hives.

Also, tell your neighbors if you see any bear activity so that they are aware that there might be bears in the area.
