Does Yogurt Go Bad?
We've had some pretty strange conversations in the halls of Townsquare Media, but this one might be one of the strangest. Does yogurt go bad?
It seems like a pretty obvious question. Yogurt is a dairy product. Dairy goes bad after a while It makes sense that the answer would be yes, yogurt goes bad.
However....according to an article on items of food that are normally good past their "expiration date," yogurt is good for quite a bit longer than you'd expect.
Open yogurt will spoil sooner than unopened yogurt, but sealed yogurt will usually last one to two weeks past the sell-by date.
I used to stick to that sell by date too, but then I had an experience where I took a shot on some yogurt that was not only past the expiration date, I had left it out of the fridge all day. Now, I wouldn't suggest you try this. But I was hungry that day, and guess what...it was fine.
I also grew up in a house where if we found a little mold on some cheese my mom would just roll her eyes and say, "Just cut it off. It'll be fine." And guess what...it was.
So what do you say? Are you the kind of person that follows expiration or sell by dates closely? Or are you a "just smell it" kind of person?
