Why New York Landmarks will be Blue, Green and Orange Tonight
Landmarks across the Empire State will be illuminated in blue, green, and orange - the colors designated for this year's national observance to recognize the importance of victims' rights and access to justice.
On a day when New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that more than $6.3 million in federal funding would be made available which will allow seven programs across the state to expand their anti-gun violence work and increase critical services for victims and families, she also announced that several landmarks across New York would be lit in special colors representing the anti-gun violence movement.
The two-year grants, which will be administered by the New York State Office of Victim Services, will help to fund outreach staff who will connect with victims and families, crisis responders, licensed social workers, and other staff. The grants will also be used for training, equipment and emergency funding for essential items such as clothing, housing, and transportation expenses.
Governor Hochul said via a press release:
New York will never waiver in its commitment to ensuring that victims of gun violence and other crimes can access services wherever and whenever they need them...We are taking a comprehensive approach to tackling gun violence while also ensuring all New Yorkers, no matter their race or background, are treated with dignity and respect.
Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown added:
These violence prevention efforts and restorative practices are a critical component of our City's comprehensive strategy, which also employs effective law enforcement and job opportunity creation, to reduce the gun violence that is affecting cities across the Nation.
Locally, Niagara Falls will be lit in blue, green, and orange tonight. Other landmarks across the state that will also be illuminated include:
- One World Trade Center
- Grand Central Terminal - Pershing Square Viaduct
- State Fairgrounds - Main Gate & Expo Center
- The "Franklin D. Roosevelt" Mid-Hudson Bridge
- The Lake Placid Olympic Jumping Complex
