A few weeks ago a new garbage removal fee was proposed to aid in a financial shortfall for the City of Niagara Falls. That proposed fee has been passed.

According to WKBW, the Niagara Falls city council passed the controversial garbage fee by a 3-2 vote.

Mayor Paul Dyster is looking to close a four million dollar gap in the 2020 budget.

The fee will cost an extra $180 per home and $15 a month.

Council Chairman Andrew Touma said without the new garbage fee, the city would have had to eventually raise property tax, which hasn't been done in years.

"Therefore because of this deficit we have to go back to the taxpayers and say we're going to need your assistance, and if you want to maintain this service we're going to charge you a fee," Touma said.

Many residents are not happy about it.

"This city has overspent for decades now, they don't know how to hold a budget," said Christopher Frank, a Niagara Falls neighbor.

The new fee will be due starting next year.
