It's been a rough go for the Sabres lately, even though winning against the Edmonton Oilers in overtime on Thursday night helped their playoff race -- now only out by six points of the last wild card spot. A Jack Eichel overtime, penalty-shot winner was quite the sight!

But Thursday's big news was two trades that general manager Jason Botterill made.

The first was shipping defenseman Marco Scandella to the Montreal Canadiens for a fourth-round draft pick in 2020 (formerly the San Jose Sharks draft pick).

A short time later, a second trade was made. This time the Sabres acquired forward Michael Frolik from the Calgary Flames, in exchange for that same fourth-round pick they got from Montreal.

Frolik is a veteran who was drafted in 2006 (10th overall). He has had a tough time scoring points in Calgary, so a change of scenery is a good thing. He can also kill penalties. He is however, on an expiring contract.

The Sabres needed to move out defenseman (which they have a lot of) in favor of forward depth to help the scoring. I have a feeling this won't be the last move the Sabres make over the next few weeks.
