For the second straight game the Buffalo Sabres gave up the tying goal in the closing seconds, but this time it cost them the game.  The Colorado Avalanche pulled their goaltender for an extra skater with 1:30 left to play and the Avs needed almost all of it to finally break thru with the tying goal, scoring with just 1.9 seconds left in the third period.   After a scoreless overtime, the Avs won it in a shootout for a stunning 5-4 victory.

The loss overshadows a two-goal game by rookie Marcus Foligno who appeared to have scored a hat trick in the third period when a shot by defenseman Alexander Sulzer deflected off the stick of an Avs defenseman.  The fans thought so and tossed hats and caps on the ice.  Tyler Ennis finished with three points.

What appeared to be a victory and two points turns into a shootout loss and only one point in the standings.  So now the Sabres trail Washington by three points for the final playoff spot with 11 games left to play.

So almost every game now is a must-win for the rest of the season.  The Sabres play a pair of games in Florida against the Panthers on Saturday and at Tampa Bay on Monday.
