Important Warning About Baby Deer In Western New York
Spring is here, and people are beginning to get out of their houses a little more these days. But, people are being warned about what to do if they see certain wildlife when they're outside.
These days, you can stumble across a deer just about everywhere you go. It might be a little more common than you think. Just last year I stumbled upon one while I was playing disc golf at Como Park in Lancaster. A disc had been thrown out of bounds and as I was kicking around in the weeds trying to find it, I noticed this.
If you're having a hard time seeing it, this is what it looks like when you zoom in.
It was a baby fawn curled up just a couple of feet off of the course. There wasn't anything protecting it, and there wasn't another deer that you could see near it.
Most people would think they should do something for that deer. However, the best thing you can do for it, is to get away from it.
Do not touch baby deer if you find them
Police warn people not to touch deer that they find unless they appear to be visibly injured or in distress. You could create a bigger problem for that deer if you do.
The deer's mother often leaves them in that spot to avoid drawing predators to them. If you move the baby, you could separate them permanently from their mothers.
They're beautiful and even very peaceful to look at, but it's best if when you find them, you leave them alone.
