What Is Larceny And What Is The Penalty In New York State?

According to FindLaws, the crime of larceny is defined as,

When someone takes another's property (without the use of force) with the intention of depriving the rightful owner of that property either permanently or for a significant amount of time. Practically speaking, larceny is the same as common theft.

In New York State, it is punishable by prison time, plus fines.

- For property exceeding $1,000 in value, it is a class E felony, which is punishable by up to 4 years in prison with a minimum of one year.
- For property exceeding $3,000 in value, it is a class D felony, which is punishable by up to 7 years in prison with a minimum of one year.
- For property exceeding $50,000 in value, it is a class C felony, which is punishable by up to 15 years in prison with a minimum of one year.
- For property exceeding $1,000,000 in value, it is a class B felony, which is punishable by up to 25 years in prison with a minimum of one year to a third of the maximum sentence given.
